WordPress 7.2: What Is Planned for the December Release

WordPress is preparing its final major release of 2026. The published 7.2 schedule targets 8 December, with Beta 1 scheduled for 20 October and the first release candidate for 17 November. These are planning milestones, and the schedule can change.

For website owners, the useful question is how the changes might affect everyday editing and the features their business already relies on. Here are the areas worth following as testing progresses.

More consistent design controls

The official roadmap includes further responsive styling work, custom block states, and controls for styling form elements through Global Styles. It also lists work on Description List and Table of Contents blocks.

The practical benefit could be more consistent editing across different parts of a website. However, the available controls will still depend on the theme and blocks in use. A release announcement alone does not tell you which options your own editor will expose.

A new default theme called Ipsum

The October developer update introduces Ipsum as a minimal blogging theme planned for WordPress 7.2. It represents a new direction for the default theme’s naming and presentation.

For an existing business website, the arrival of a default theme is a chance to explore ideas. Decisions about redesigning an established site should still start with its content, customers, and current requirements.

AI work continues alongside the release

The roadmap places much of the ongoing AI and agent-related experimentation in the AI plugin and MCP Adapter projects. Their inclusion in development discussions does not guarantee that the features will become part of WordPress core in 7.2.

For a site using an AI provider connector, it is worth checking the separate feature plugin’s requirements and settings. Confirm what a tool can access and test its output in a draft before adding it to a publishing workflow.

How to prepare your website

Use a staging copy to test the editing tasks your team actually performs: changing page content, uploading media, updating navigation, and working with custom fields or blocks. Also check the public site on mobile and test important forms.

Keep a short list of issues with the WordPress, plugin, and theme versions used in the test. Repeat the relevant checks as release candidates arrive, then plan the production update around your website’s needs.

The roadmap explicitly leaves room for features to change or move to a later release. We will judge the final release by what ships and how it behaves on a real website.
